What is causing your fear?

Your mind and body have a natural and powerful ability to keep you healthy. The main job of your wise inner mind (the super-conscious mind, the sub-conscious or unconscious mind) is to keep you safe. This part of your mind works behind the scenes, 24 hours a day, ensuring you are breathing, digesting your food, your blood is being purified and circulated, body temperature is maintained, and so on.

When the mind perceives real or imagined danger, it sends an alert signal to the body, and the body gets into action and prepares to respond appropriately.

This is wonderful as when in danger you can quickly take action. You may protect yourself by fighting back or you may run to safety. Once the threat is gone the body relaxes and the body systems are restored.

However, sometimes there is no real danger, yet for some strange reason, the mind senses danger and triggers the fight, flight or freeze response. As the body prepares for this perceived danger you may find your heart begins to pound, your breathing changes, your chest tightens, and you have a desire to flee or freeze. You see, the mind does not know the difference between real and imagined danger.

One of the reasons for this is a limiting program. This could have resulted from an experience or event from the past. It is an internal program that may have been essential for you as a child, but not valid anymore. Yet the mind perceives that situation as a threat and responds accordingly.

Here is an example. Imagine a child named Ana is hiding in a closet and gets locked in for a few minutes. She cannot get out and panics. The mind decides that tight spaces are dangerous. Every time Ana, who is now an adult, enters an enclosed or tight space, she panics. Logically she knows that there is no reason for her to be fearful, yet she has no control over the fear.

One powerful way to address this problem is to re-write the program. To assure the inner mind that this program is outdated.
